    IP addresses, in plain words

    What is an IP address?
    The number your connection uses on the internet, assigned by your provider. Every site you visit sees it — it is how the answer finds its way back to you.
    Public vs. private — which one is this?
    This page shows your public address, the one the outside world sees. The 192.168.x.x-style address on your own Wi-Fi is private and never leaves your network.
    IPv4 vs. IPv6 — what’s the difference?
    IPv4 is the older, shorter format (203.0.113.7); IPv6 is the newer, longer one (2a00:1450::8a), created because IPv4 addresses ran out. Many connections have both — this page shows each of yours, and “not detected” next to IPv6 simply means your provider hasn’t switched it on.
    Why does my address change?
    Most home connections get a dynamic address that can change when your router reconnects. A VPN replaces it entirely — run the check with the VPN on and off and you will see two different answers.
    What can someone learn from it?
    Roughly your country and city, and who your internet provider is — not your name or your exact location. Still, it is the one identifier every site sees, which is why this check asks nothing else about you.
    Why 20 servers and not one?
    Speed and trust. One server can be slow, down, or simply wrong; twenty independent operators racing give you the fastest answer available — and let you watch them agree.

    How it works. Your browser asks 20 servers at the same time. Each of them sees your connection and reports the address it came from. The first to answer wins — and at that moment every other request is cancelled through AbortController. The other address family is then fetched the same way, from family-locked servers only, so IPv4 and IPv6 can never be confused with each other. The request is made from your browser, not from this server, because an IP address is a property of the connection, not of the request: a server asking on your behalf would only get its own address back.
